School Days
“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men.”
Luke 2:52
Years later, I still remember the chatter and laughter as two of my daughters walked up the driveway. “A good sign,” I thought, as I listened for a comment that would give me a preview of their day. They had started at a new school and admittedly had been a little apprehensive when they left that morning. As they walked into the kitchen, Susan threw down her backpack and smiling from ear to ear, announced, “I love it there!” Katie was quick to follow, “That is the best school!” As I prepared their after school snack, I listened to a breakdown of their day. I had prayed through their entire day—praying each hour that they would adapt well, enjoy their classes and make friends. Their comments gave me my answers.
For the most part, the Bible is silent about Jesus’ growing up years. We know that Mary and Joseph found Him teaching adult men in the temple when he was only twelve. As the sinless Son of God, He represented flawlessness in interpersonal relationships. Physically, he grew to manhood. Yes, in perfect balance “Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and men.”
How are you doing today? Are you growing? Are you expanding mentally, maintaining physical fitness, developing a deeper relationship with God, and taking time for friends and family? At times and in life seasons, one aspect may take precedence over another for a short time, but don’t assume ongoing neglect of any. Jesus wants us to grow. He even gives us a model.
Reflection: Read 2 Peter 3:18. Can you make this verse a goal?
As the school year begins for your children, this is a great time for us to think about personal growth. What area of your life do you want to see expand this year? How can the thoughts found in 2 Cor. 9:8 help you to stay focused?
School Days French Toast
This “make-the-night-before” recipe is a great breakfast on a school day or even on a lazy Saturday morning. You’ll just have to wake up 40 minutes before the rest of the family to put it in the oven.
½ cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp. corn syrup
2 apples, peeled and sliced
5 eggs
1 ½ cups milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 loaf French bread sliced into ¾ inch slices
Cook sugar, butter and corn syrup until syrupy. Pour into a greased 9x13 baking pan. Spread apples over syrup, then cover with bread. Whisk together eggs, milk and vanilla. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered for 40 min at 350 degrees.
