Moving….
"Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Psalm 103:2
We moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina on January 6. Now, it is February 1st, I am still unpacking and getting settled. This move, unlike my previous ones, has been harder. My husband and I are 16 years older than the last time we moved and we’ve noticed it! In the past, our daughters at home helped; this time, as retirees, we are doing the work solo. But in the mundane and ordinary scenario of moving, I have discovered some extraordinary treasures. On Facebook one day, I read a friend’s status as, “I am blessed. I woke up.” I agree! I’ve made a goal this year of beginning every day with thanks: thanks for the blessing of waking up and for the opportunity to live another day, even if it means unpacking boxes and experiencing frustration at not having space for certain things.
So what are some of my extraordinary treasures? Glad you asked!
I’ve found that in sorting boxes and their contents, my memories are many and sweet.
My accumulation of photo albums, scrapbooks, children’s toys (yes I have saved some for grandchildren), diplomas, old textbooks, needlework, and my Bible study teachings and writing, reveal that I have lived a rich life of changing seasons-- each with significance.
There are a few kinks to work out in our new house: a kitchen drawer that is off track, a phone jack that needs to be properly wired, areas where paint needs to be touched up, a floor board that needs to be replaced. The production manager in our community has been a delight to work with. I am thankful for his timely responses and pleasant attitude which make our life easier. I am grateful for the workmen’s abilities and skills to make my home beautiful.
Even though we may work more slowly, my husband and I accomplish a lot each day. We are thankful for the health and strength that allow us to work and the joy that we find in it.
My e-mails and calls from friends that I left in PA remind me that friendship is a gift and some stand the test of time and distance.
In meeting new people and visiting churches, I see opportunities to make new friends and minister in new ways. I develop the treasure of patience and learning to wait, as we have not found the right fit yet.
As we shop, arrange for hook ups of cable and trash pick-up, establish our banking, and locate hairdressers, dentists and doctors, I notice that there are different ways of doing things and I can appreciate diversity.
I am thankful that as we have taken breaks for coffee, a visit to a museum and out to lunch, my husband and I can share this season together, and that at the end of the day, we can put our feet up and rest.
Perhaps you aren’t moving, but can you make a list of your observations? What extraordinary treasures can you discover as you trace your path from morning until night? It might surprise you to find that you are not living a busy, routine, or a boring day, but one full of joy and extraordinary treasures!
Reflection: As you make your list, reflect on Psalm 103 and the blessings and benefits that are yours. If you want to dig a little deeper, find a scripture that correlates with each treasure you find. For example, for the treasure of joy in work, perhaps a verse might be Col. 3:23.
I have lived in five states and each time, I have collected recipes from friends. This particular one comes from my friend Bev. It’s a simple sandwich that is a departure from the elegant teas that she hosts, but I still remember sitting in her kitchen the day she served it. Yes, I remember the “menu,” but the extraordinary treasure was the time together talking and the friendship we shared. Invite someone today to your home. It doesn’t have to be fancy. There’s a treasure waiting for you.
